Instructor Spotlight – Jason Layden

cardio dance instructor and creator of plyojam jason layden

List five words that best describe you?
Friendly, funny, cute, cheerful and loud.

What inspired you to teach dance and fitness?
I was inspired by my sister who watched Jane Fonda videos and Richard Simmons videos while growing up. I was also very inspired by my stepmom who was the varsity cheerleading coach at my high school. Unfortunately, she is no longer with us, but I know she would be cheering for me.

What would you like your students to know about you?
I don’t have a strong dance background. The only real training I have was in my boy band days and that was 10 years ago. It goes to show that any one can dance, and start at any age.

What are your favorite hobbies and interests?
I am the biggest fan of superheroes. I am also a total sci-fi geek. I am lucky enough to be living and making money doing my most favorite hobby which is dancing.

At what age did you begin dancing? And when did you know you wanted to teach others?
The earliest time I can remember dancing was when I was seven. My dad videotaped me reenacting the Michael Jackson, Bad, video. Not only did I dance the entire video but I had the outfit on as well. I realized I wanted to teach others how to dance and become fit when I was in my 30s, when I lost my cousin to a heart attack. It made me really look at health a different way and I thought, what better way to help people, and give them a way to be healthier?
